Speedwell - Coming soon to a marina near you sometime soon!
History
There were seven boats called Speedwell over the years, this particular boat was
built at Arnside in 1919 for, and registered with Morecambe Fisherman's Mutual
Assurance from 1919 until 1932 by Percy Baxter of 2 Morecambe Street.
She was in the Morecambe Regatta 23/09/1921, the next we know of her was
July 1938 when she was owned by John Martin Junior of Fleetwood, she was sold
on 20 October 1943 to William Stevenson of 231 Clifton Drive South, St Anne's,
then bought on 25 July 1944 by Odafoam Limited of 46 Greenland Street, Liverpool
when she was skippered by Alfred Pilkington.
She was purchased on 23 March 1946 by Robert Moss Woodhouse of 26 Sun Street, Morecambe.
Sold on 29th December 1965 to Charles George Overett of 20 Burlington Avenue.
On the 3rd May 1973 she was purchased by Mr D Towne of Fleetwood. We have copies of
receipts from her sale twice in 1988, one, dated 23/6/88 is signed by a JB Nolan and
records "received from KG Wilson" £800.00 cash, the other, 4 months later on 22/10/88
records the sale to Chris Tulloch by what looks like G Wilson. Chris owned her from
then until 1st of May 2006 when she was bought by myself, Derek Bayley with the intention
of restoring her and using her as a cruising boat.
She carried several numbers over the years:
LR31 13.08.1920 until 22.11.1933
WO74 06.12.1933 until 25.03.1938
FD97 09.05.1938 until 23.03.1946
LR29 18.04.1946 until 03.05.1973
WA42 papers not yet found.
With grateful thanks to Nick and Martin from the Old Gaffers Association who
between them supplied most of this history.

Lifting on at Hartlepool
25/11/06 Posted at 11:33 am on Wednesday, December 27th 2006
Didn't sleep very well last night worrying about today but, apart from being a bit dull, it seems ok, Up at 6 15, breakfast by 7 and out by ¼ past, had a text message at 7 45 from Steve to say they had another job on and they would be late, spent a very frustrating time trying to get it sorted with him and worrying about the crane waiting at the other end, rang John and he delayed the crane for a while but it still turned up at 10 30, Problems with the original wagon meant the lift was delayed while he sorted transport so instead of 1 wagon we had 2, one to carry the boat and a rigid with a crane to lift it on. Jacqui and Dean videoed the whole thing, including footage from the camera attached to the boat. Looks great! So all in all, even with all the frustrations it was great to see her sat there in her compound, Jacqui and I had a great day with it all, everyone was marvellous, big thanks to John Hewitt who held to his original price despite being kept waiting for hours. as we were lifting her off the trailer one wit asked why I'd spent all that money to bring £10 worth of firewood from Hartlepool!!

Weather forecast for tomorrow is for storm force winds, Oooer!!

Had John Hewitt round to assess the lift into the compound, he seems confident about it.

Finally finished the compound base, it's taken almost 20 tons of mix to do it! all done with a 1/2 bag mixer, it's done me personally the world of good as I've lost 9 pounds in weight while we've been doing it.

Just got back from holiday, (North Berwick) and had a brainwave, the spare land we have that isn't LONG enough is WIDE enough to take Speedwell with a few feet to spare!

Spent most of this month getting more and more frustrated as the yard we were supposed to be moving to became less and less of a possibility, i've been able to get about 12 of the frames cut from templates I've made, still making other templates. looking around for somewhere else, bought a trailer to make into a mobile workshop.

Spent about two hours at the sawmill this afternoon, John had a branch picked out for me,Tim had the full branch sawn into slices in no time and found me another 2" slice, that should keep me busy cutting frames for a while! John was as good as his word, pardon my earlier cynisism.

Went to see about the oak for the stem of speedwell today,I'd made up some templates at the boatyard before the stem disintegrated into bits and left these with him. after all the calls I’ve made over the past few weeks at last someone who knows what they’re talking about, as little as I think I know it seems I know more than most of the people I've talked to, quite a character but straightforward, though he wouldn’t be drawn on the price or a delivery date, “it’ll be reasonable and not too long" was as much commitment as I could get. I think that translates as “bit more than you thought and possibly for the weekend" just don’t ask which weekend!

tarped off
15 & 16/07/06 Posted at 9:17 am on Wednesday, December 27th 2006
Spent most of this weekend building in the steady frames to hold her up when we move, we need to be ready to move when we get back from holiday so it all has to be sorted by sunday night. we managed to get it all supported and tarped off, the boom, gaff and engine all fastened to the frame. we can go on holiday now, hopefully the yard we're moving to will be useable when we get back.

At the garage early to get the frame loaded, Wagon didn’t turn up 'til nearly 9 so ¼ past before we were on our way, off loaded in the car park behind the marina shops and had to wait for the crane for a while but straight forward when it arrived, Jacqui videoed the whole thing, lifted the engine out after getting the frame laid in place, spent the rest of the day lifting the boat and getting the frame placed right, she’s sitting on the frame now and it hasn’t moved, she’s sitting nearer to the true water line so some of the water has drained out. (this is the pic at the top of the site, the nameplate isn't really there, it's my sons bit of computer magic)

My brother Colin and I started to strip off the rotten wood, keeping what we could as patterns, measuring and photographing everything as we go.

We had intended to go sailing but went to see Speedwell and do some measuring, ended up clearing her out, Jacqui found a brush, shovel and wheel barrow off her own bat, took her coat off and moved the rubbish I was throwing down, to the skip without being asked and with a smile on her face! looking at the state of the deck bracing and timbers i think we need to sit her on a frame to move her, i've been asking for advice about the size of frame and what to make it from, my own feeling is that something about 100mm square section in about 4-5mm thickness should be ok, she'll weigh about 3-4 tons when she's stripped out, I've ordered the steel and it should be delivered this week
